Chapter 7: Collaborative AI Systems Design
Chapter 7, “Collaborative AI Systems Design,” advocates for creative and playful participatory methods to improve the design and implementation of intelligent human-machine systems within organizations. The chapter addresses the widespread issue of organizations struggling to achieve positive returns on AI investments, largely due to challenges in technology design and implementation that can be mitigated through inclusive stakeholder collaboration.
It introduces a suite of interactive tools, including three sets of AI design cards—AI Concepts, AI Provocations, and Human Flourishing in the Age of AI—and a collaborative design sprint process called “Designing Tiny Robots”. This sprint involves activities like creating designer avatars, using Task, Experience, and Touchpoint cards to ideate solutions, and building physical models to make abstract AI concepts tangible. Additionally, AI Provocation cards are used to stimulate discussion on negative consequences of AI, while Human Flourishing cards focus on positive human aspects, and Citizen Archetypes encourage self-reflection on AI perceptions. Disruption cards related to ethics, cyber threats, and bugs further challenge design assumptions.
The core aim is to make AI systems design tangible, engaging, and understandable to a wide range of stakeholders, fostering AI literacy and co-creation. By enabling stakeholders to work collaboratively with these tools, organizations can better account for the complex socio-technical interactions, leading to more human-centered, effective, and adopted AI solutions.
